Lessons Learned Building and Operating the World’s Largest OpenStack Clouds
The primary barriers to OpenStack adoption are complexity and lack of operational experience. According to a recent survey published on, 50% of enterprises that tried to implement an OpenStack cloud failed. Rackspace is ideally positioned to help enterprises as one of the founders of OpenStack, as operator of the world’s largest OpenStack public cloud and as operator of some of the world’s largest private clouds. This includes the two 1,000 node developer clouds under management by the OpenStack Innovation Center (OSIC) and used by the community to test the performance, reliability, operability, and scalability of OpenStack. OSIC was established by Intel and Rackspace and is designed to accelerate enterprise adoption of the world’s leading open source cloud operating system while supporting open source principles. How Do You Test Your Openstack?
With test driven development, continuous integration/continuous deployment and devops practices now the norm, most organizations understand the importance of testing their applications. But what about the cloud those applications are going to live on? Too many companies miss this critical step, leading to gaps in their operations, which can lead to production issues, API outages, inability to upgrade, problems when trying to upgrade and general instability of the cloud. Also, testing ahead of the next OpenStack release is the proactive way to approach this issue. Continuously learning how new and upcoming OpenStack features might help, enhance or affect your application is achievable by testing with us. It all begs the question: “Do you even test?” In this talk we will discuss the different approaches used to test OpenStack deployments and their value in the industry as well as some of the new testing technology from Red Hat. Attendees will learn:
  • The types of testing done for OpenStack deployments
  • Gaps in the tempest tests
  • How Red Hat Distributed Continuous Integration (DCI) has brought CI/CD to OpenStack deployments
  • How Rackspace leverages (DCI) to reduce the cycle time required to test new features before making them ready for customers’ production clouds
  • How custom tests can be applied to DCI to test the specific scenarios that matter most
